Bonnie Smith is a singer, songwriter, composer, pianist and guitarist with more than 20 years’ experience as a performer, musician and vocal teacher. She works across a range of musical styles, with a particular interest in world music, jazz, improvisation and multilingual singing.
Bonnie has studied and performed in Australia, Canada, the United States, Spain and France. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice, a Bachelor of Creative Arts and postgraduate qualifications in Language and Creative Arts therapy, and has trained in jazz and improvisation, including studies with Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin at the VCA.
She sings in English, Spanish, French, and her international experience has strongly influenced her approach to music and teaching.
Bonnie is the founder of the world music ensemble Reflejos and a member, manager and composer of the all-female Mariachi-inspired band Queen of Hearts.
She has performed extensively in Australia at several festivals across the nations and overseas, including in France, Spain and Canada.
Her creative work explores voice, improvisation, different languages and musical traditions, with a strong focus on collaboration and connection.
Bonnie teaches voice and musicianship at Loreto and piano at Merri Creek, working with students of all ages and levels. She also teaches privately through her own practice.
With experience teaching children, teenagers and adults, Bonnie works with students preparing for AMEB exams, VCE and tertiary music studies, as well as those who simply want to develop their voice, learn an instrument or enjoy making music.
She also leads Circle Singing, an improvisation-based approach to group singing that encourages people to listen, experiment and create music together.
Alongside her music career, Bonnie is currently completing a Master’s in Creative Arts Therapy, with a particular interest in voice, creativity, somatic practice and the ways music can support connection and self-expression.
Whether working with a professional musician, a student preparing for an exam, or someone who simply wants to explore their voice, Bonnie aims to create a relaxed and supportive environment where people can develop their skills, be creative and enjoy making music.
